A Swedish breakfast (frukost): what to put on the table
October 27, 2026 – Fiskskaldjur
The Swedish frukost is simple and sandwich-centred. With a few items from our Swedish groceries, you can set a proper table at home.
The basics
- Bread: knäckebröd (crispbread) or fresh bread.
- Butter: Bregott, the butter-and-rapeseed-oil spread many Swedes grew up with (extra salted is also available).
- Cheese: Herrgård or Präst for slicing, Västerbotten for a stronger taste.
- Filmjölk: soured milk, eaten with cereal or muesli.
Toppings
- Kalles Kaviar with sliced egg. See Swedish kaviar.
- Cold-smoked salmon or gravad lax with cheese or cream cheese and dill.
- Peeled shrimps for a räkmacka.
A weekend brunch idea
Boiled eggs, a plate of smoked salmon and gravad lax, cheese, crispbread, butter, cucumber and tomato, with coffee and fika afterwards.
