Stekt inlagd strömming: Sweden's fried and pickled Baltic herring
October 28, 2026 – Fiskskaldjur
Stekt inlagd strömming is Baltic herring that is first fried and then pickled. Strömming is the small, delicate Baltic herring (Clupea harengus membras). The result is tangy and savoury with a firm bite, quite different from the softer marinated herring in jars. Read sill or strömming? for the background.
How to serve it
- With boiled new potatoes, sour cream and chives
- With a hard-boiled egg and crisp bread
- As part of a herring table, with a small glass of snaps; see the herring table guide
